Does Medicare Pay for
Chiropractic Care?
Medicare will pay for chiropractic treatment of conditions that
are the result of subluxation. A subluxation is misalignment
of spinal vertebrae and can cause many different types of
symptoms. Your chiropractor will determine the existence of
subluxation either by x-ray, physical examination or both.
The number of treatments that Medicare will allow per year will
depend your diagnosis. You may be entitled to 12 - 36
treatments per year depending on your condition.
How much will Medicare pay and what will it cost me?
Traditional Medicare (POS Point of Service) You
are responsible for your yearly deductible and a small co-payment
per office visit, unless you have a secondary insurance, such as
Medex.
If you have MEDEX it will pay your yearly deductible
and co-pays. If you have a private secondary insurance, it may
pay your yearly deductible and co-payment, however, you need to
call and ask what your secondary insurance will cover
Medicare pays only for chiropractic manipulation. It does
not pay for x-rays, nutritional supplements, orthopedic supports
or supplies if they are needed.
How do I know if I have traditional POS (Point of Service)
Medicare?
Call the telephone number on your Medicare or health insurance
card and ask. With traditional Medicare, you do not need
a referral. You do not have to be part of an HMO (Health
Maintenance Organization) or a PPO (Preferred Provider
Organization). This means that you are free to go to any
health care provider of your choice, and you do not need to ask
for a referral from a primary care physician.
What if I have an
HMO/PPO plan administering my Medicare
benefits?
First, look in you benefits book. Although you are
entitled to chiropractic care under Medicare, you will need to
follow the rules of whichever insurance plan you selected.
Is there someone in your office who can help me understand
what Medicare benefits I am entitled to?
Yes, our
insurance staff will be happy to help you with your questions.
Bring all your health insurance cards to the office and we will make the necessary phone calls.
