Childhood Ear Infections

  • Acute Earache - Symptoms include sudden onset of ear pain and fever, and hearing loss.  It can include redness and heat around the ear.  This condition may be associated with cold or allergy symptoms.

  • Chronic Earache - Otitis Media (fluid behind the ear drum without evidence of acute infection) is the most common form, generally a middle ear condition which recurs over a period of time with chronic middle ear fluid.  Build up of fluid behind the ear drum can cause acute pain.

  • Causes of Middle Ear Infection include environmental and food allergies.  Good nutrition will help to support the immune system.  Elimination of dairy products has proved helpful, as well as a sharp reduction of sugar and processed and fatty foods that contain oxidized fats.  Children who are regularly exposed to cigarette smoke are at a greater risk of developing middle ear infections.  Cigarette smoke depletes vitamins  C and E.  In particular, vitamin E is important to the immune system.

  • Bacterial Infection and Viruses can cause acute middle-ear infections.  Under those circumstances treatment with antibiotics may be appropriate.  However, it should be considered that overuse of antibiotics diminishes their effectiveness.  Recent studies have shown that resistant bacteria are increasing at an alarming rate. Another consideration is that antibiotics can destroy beneficial bacteria as well as the harmful bacteria.  Destruction of beneficial bacteria can lead to intestinal upset and yeast infections in various parts of the body including the middle ear.

  • Will The Earache Go Away if antibiotics, decongestants and antihistamines are not used?  If fever is not a problem, it may be better to not rush into asking your doctor for a prescription.  Having the child lay down with the painful ear on a heating pad or hot water bottle may induce draining; it will at least feel comforting.  If the condition persists over a few days your doctor may have to initiate a course of antibiotic treatment. A well informed parent is better able to discuss treatment choices with the doctor.

  • Conservative Treatment:  Prompt treatment at the first sign of respiratory infection may reduce ear infections.  Ask your chiropractor about herbal compounds and their use for  reduction of upper respiratory conditions, colds and flu.  Herbs and other natural compounds may support the secretary immune system, thereby reducing nasal congestion that can spread to the middle ear.
