Automobile Accidents

If I'm injured in a motor vehicle accident, who will pay for treatment of my injuries?

In Massachusetts all automobile insurance policies have compulsory no fault personal injury protection.  This means that anyone who is in an automobile that is insured in Massachusetts, will be covered in the event of injury.  It is compulsory insurance, and making a claim for treatment of injuries does not increase the owner's insurance premium.  Therefore, your medical bills will be paid by the insurance of the automobile that you are riding in.  This coverage is called Personal Injury Protection and covers up to $8000 in medical expenses.

How will I get the insurance company to pay my medical bills?

Our insurance staff are expert in processing claims of all types.  You should be able to provide us with some information on your first visit including  a description of the accident, information about the vehicle that you were riding in such as the owner and the auto insurance company.  Once we have the necessary information, we will bill the insurer directly.  When you call for an appointment we will tell you exactly what information you need to process your claim.

Will I Need a Lawyer?

You may not need a lawyer. Your injuries may respond quickly to chiropractic if you seek treatment as soon after the accident as possible. If you believe that another person’s negligence has been responsible for your disability and injuries, you may want to consult a lawyer concerning your rights. A lawyer can advise you of what you should expect your auto insurance company to do for you under the Personal Injury Protection portion of your policy.

Our insurance staff are highly qualified to advise you in these matters, and you may feel free to ask their assistance at any time during the course of your care.

Whiplash

Whiplash most commonly occurs when a vehicle is rear-ended.  When the vehicle is suddenly struck it is propelled forward causing the passenger's head to be thrown back.  What generally happens next is that the driver slams on the brakes, or the vehicle strikes another object and the sudden stopping of the vehicle causes the passenger's head to be thrust forward.  This backward and forward thrusting is called whiplash or acceleration/deceleration syndrome.  This causes the bones of the neck to pull apart and the muscles and ligaments to stretch and tear.  Early chiropractic care is essential to restore proper alignment and to promote the healing process.

Common symptoms of whiplash are headache, vertigo, ear ringing, neck pain and stiffness, shoulder pain and back pain.  There can be pain shooting down the arms with numbness or tingling, nausea, difficulty holding the head erect, stiffness and muscle spasm.

Whiplash injury is also called a CAD injury for Cervical Acceleration-Deceleration.  The torn soft tissues repair with scar tissue.  Similar to the patches used to repair holes in the roads, scar tissue is never as strong as the original normal tissue which has a regular even pattern.  Normal tissue conforms.  Scar tissue, on the other hand is laid down randomly, like a stack of hay compared to the smooth lines of a brick wall.

Tissues adapt to the motion of the joint that they surround.  The joint needs to be moving for the random lines of scar tissue to even vaguely resemble the tissue it has replaced.  When muscle spasm and swelling occurs, they prevent motion and the feeling of stiffness which is so common in whiplash.  Loss of motion results in poor healing.  Chiropractic manipulation applied to the affected area mobilizes the joint, accelerates the healing process and reduces irregular scar tissue.
